Patrols cut amid burglary spike BY GABRIELLE STUART The Riccarton Community Watch has had to cut back its daytime patrols, at the same time as there has been a spike in daytime burglaries in the area. They have had to cut back to just one daytime patrol a week, because of a lack of volunteers. They usually run daytime patrols at least four days a week. At the same time, Riccarton Community Constable Ken Carter

said there had been several daytime burglaries reported each month in Riccarton. “There are always some burglaries that happen, but we usually do see burglaries happen in groups or patterns, and there have been more than usual here.” The Riccarton Community Watch has been working in the area for more than 10 years, so he said it was difficult to say how much they had reduced crime. But he believed the patrols did

deter people from committing crimes. “They are very valuable in having a presence out there. It comes down to every pair of eyes and ears we can get out there makes a difference.” A Fendalton resident Gary, who is also a member of the Riccarton Community Watch, had his home burgled during the day this month. He did not want his last name used. He said the burglars broke into

The couple had a burglar alarm installed, which went off – but because there had been several false alarms when pets set the alarm off, the neighbours did not report it. Gary believed that if the community patrol had been seen in the area, it might have put the burglars off. • Turn to page 2

Cotswold School year 3 pupils took to their bicycles for a bike rally at McLeans Island last week. SeeWith helmets fitted tight, 75 children took to the Inside: hills, most completing the 15km track. The children who were confident riders went to McLeans Island, while those developing their skills practised at school with a circuit around the playgrounds. See The aim of the event was Inside: to encourage the community to use local resources and to promote healthy choices outside of school. This event was organised by the school sports co-ordinator and teacher, David Guthrie. When asked about the bike rally James Comyns, 7, said: “I liked it because I was speedy and I liked going down the hill with no brakes.” Ethan Gill, 7, said: “It was a good challenge.” Emma Coe, 7, said: “The best thing about the bike rally was that I got to have fun!”

Patrols cut • From page 1 “I feel it has a benefit, because the more times we have our car slowly driving around the community the better. But some of these people are desperate.” Community watch co-ordinator Geoff Parfitt said the patrol still had about 25 members, but many worked during the day and could only patrol at night. He said that daytime patrols were just as important. “The majority of burglaries are happening between 10am and 4pm during the day, because people can drive down the street and say that house is empty, and that house is empty and they have no one to interrupt them.” Anyone interested in joining the patrol should phone Mr Parfitt on 341 3335. No drones in parks BY TOM DOUDNEY

Flying drones may sound like the stuff of science fiction or far away war zones but a woman who wants them banned from public parks says she is just thinking ahead. Christchurch woman Janet Begg made several suggestions in her submission on the Parks and Reserves Bylaw which is being reviewed by the city council. One of these was that drones (unmanned aircraft) be prohibited from flying over parks and reserves. In her submission, she asked that clause 13 of the bylaw,

which deals with aircraft, be amended to include a new sub-clause “to cover the threat of unmanned aerial systems, known as drones, including military drones.”

EYES ON THE SKY: Janet Begg wants drones banned from public parks and reserves. PHOTO: AP

In response, city council staff have indicated they would support including “drone” within the definition of an aircraft in the bylaw.

Joan Graham awoke in the dead of night to the sound of scratching on her door and a soft miaowing. She knew immediately it wasn’t a cat. The 79-year-old retiree lives alone in her social housing flat in Burnside. When the feline caller first came almost a year ago, Mrs Graham didn’t think too much of it. However, she awoke again a few nights later to a rapid, heavy knocking on her front door.

By the time she had dressed and opened the door, whoever it was had fled. This door-knocking, usually between 2am and 4am, has happened two or three times a week for almost a year. “I’ve tried to catch him but he’s too fast for me, and I can never get back to asleep,” she said. “It’s very disturbing for me. I lock the house up and chain everything up at night, but I still feel nervous and unsafe.” Mrs Graham refuses to leave her Kendall Ave home. “It might be a state house, but I love it and the area. If I leave,

the next thing I know I’ll be in an old people’s home.” About a month ago, she thought she heard a man coughing inside her house. A police spokesman at the Papanui station said they had responded to complaints from Mrs Graham about the late night door-knocking. He said the complaints were treated as genuine, but there was no work being done on them because of a lack of evidence. Mrs Graham is currently in Parklands Hospital after she broke her leg in a supermar-

Ms Begg said the term “drone” did not refer to small radio-controlled model aircraft operated by someone on the ground below using a hand-held radio transmitter, so such hobbyists would not be affected. While she acknowledged that drones menacing public parks was not an issue at present, she had made her submission with the future in mind, as the city council would not be required to review the bylaw again for another 10 years. Ms Begg was pleasantly surprised by the city council staff’s support for her submission.

ket last month. A mutual friend is house-sitting for her. On Monday this week, Mrs Graham said her friend had heard scratching and miaowing on the bedroom window. The retiree has put up a high gate outside her home, and recently installed a $250 security camera above her door. “The security company have told me they’ve got him on film,” she said. “They’re going to pass the footage on to police in the next day or two and show it to me to see if I recognise him.”

Last week’s fatal fire in Parklands was a tragedy that could be in the making in many parts of the city. Initial inquiries appear to lead to a pot on a stove being responsible. If this is true it was one of six that occurred during the week. Any one of the others and any of the many little incidents that we never hear about that occur every week could have led to a similar outcome. The facts remain that a third of all property fires are started by cooking. By staying with your cooking, by ensuring everything is turned off and cool before leaving the kitchen, you increase your chances of not causing the heartbreak that happened in Medina Crescent. I’ve got to applaud the team from Wainoni Station on Tuesday. Police received a call from a distressed lady in her 80s who was locked out of her house and had tracked her walker a couple of streets to where she could access a phone. She was asked to return home where she was met by the fire crew who managed to break in, who settled her down and who made sure her home was safe from fire. It’s not a big thing for the crew. It’s not a big thing in the wider scheme of things. But for that lady it’s huge. Start preparing for daylight saving next weekend. Now is the time to go out and purchase batteries if you intend to bring your smoke alarms up to date. I’ll remind you next week.

Plans for a land yacht track at Bexley Reserve are rocketing ahead, after getting unanimous support from the local community board. Business owner Ian Brown said he hoped to open the track before Christmas. He has applied for resource consent, and was at the site last week collecting quotes for the building work. The tracks would be built at the Bexley Reserve, opposite the dog agility area. One track would be built for BloKarts, New Zealand designed wind-powered land yachts, and another track for electric drift karts. Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairwoman Andrea Cummings described the plans as a “fantastic concept”. “Anything that can get people out and active is a great thing for the community.” She said that the consents process would be handled by city council staff, but she did not expect any problems with the plan. “From what we’ve seen, he seems to have covered all his bases.” Mr Brown has lived in

Cherry blossoms call for celebrations

Monday September 22 2014

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival was held at the Kurashiki Sister City Garden in the Halswell Quarry recently, attracting locals and families from further afield to the Japanese celebration. Kurashiki Sister City Committee chairman David Bolam-Smith said it was a success. “There was a good crowd under the cherry blossom trees, the ladies were dressed in their kimonos and there was a great performance by the Takumi Japanese Drumming Group.”

Auimatagi to coach national secondary school league team Canterbury rugby league figure Andrew Auimatagi has been selected as the coach of the New Zealand secondary schools side to play a New South Wales secondary schools side in Auckland tomorrow. Auimatagi was playercoach of the Linwood Keas premier side that finished third in this year’s competition, and coach of the St Thomas of Canterbury College team that won the inaugural Star Cup for year 9 and 10 students. He is also the head coach of the Canterbury development team that played in the final of the South Island inter-district competition last weekend. Auimatagi teaches at St Thomas and was a Canterbury Bulls representative in his earlier playing days. He has one Canterbury player, Aranui High School’s Cyrus Timo-Latu, in his squad for tomorrow’s game. Former student wins flight home to school reunion The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School reunion will be a special one for one former pupil, who will travel across the globe to be reunited with her family, friends and former schoolmates. Former student Katherine Free has lived in the United Kingdom for the past 30 years. She has had her flights back to New Zealand paid for by Singapore Airlines, after winning the school 125th anniversary historic photo competition this month. Her sister, Claire Mulcock, lives in Riccarton, and said she was looking forward to the reunion. “I was having breakfast on Monday morning when she rang me to say she won the competition, so it definitely made my week a bit better! She was very excited.” It has been two years since the sisters last saw one another. Ms Free returned to Christchurch in 2012 to see her mother, who was very sick and has since died.

Ms Mulcock said their father was nearly 88, so her sister was very glad she would have another opportunity to see him. “Its tough for her not being around when he’s getting older. You just don’t know what might happen when you’re so far away.” She said Ms Free had moved to the UK for her OE more than 30 years ago, but had settled down and ended up staying there. She said it was difficult to be so far apart. “There’s Skype and emails, and I have been able to travel over there to visit her a couple of times. But it’s not the same as being able to drop in for the weekend.” The sisters will be reunited at the school 125th anniversary House Party, which will be held at Te Koraha historic house in November.

• For more information on the school anniversary events, visit www.rangi125. co.nz.

TICKET HOME: Claire Mulcock (centre) was presented with the tickets that will allow her sister to travel home from the UK for a Rangi Ruru Girls’ School reunion. The ticket was presented by school director of sponsorship Sarah Wilkinson and Kate Mayo, of Singapore Airlines. REMINISCING: One of the historic photographs of Katherine Free’s student days at Rangi Ruru that won her a trip back to Christchurch. She captioned this photo: “In 1974, Form IVS put together a brilliant short film based on the Beatles’ song Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. The lyrics described multiple murders (including that of a teacher!), which the cast enacted with great gusto. We were a spirited group, always pushing boundaries, and in retrospect, the school tolerated our mildly rebellious adolescent activities with remarkable goodwill and patience.”

Spring gardening?

Protect your body with Muscle People’s top tips

A

s the days warm up, so do our green fingers. But gardening isn’t all soil and sunshine. It can be surprisingly hard on our bodies particularly for lower back pain and knee pain. When gardening, about 80 to 90 per cent of our movement is in a bent position, which is unnatural on the body, and when prolonged can lead to lower back pain. But don’t put your spade and gloves away just yet. There are plenty of easy moves you can make to prevent injury while tending to your garden. Preparation – Even though you’re not at the gym, it’s still a workout for your body - warm up with some stretches before you start. Try this stretch: lie flat on your stomach and, with feet and hips firmly on the ground, push your head and chest up while arching your back and keeping your chin up. Even better, prepare to garden by doing some core exercises like squats or lunges, as these movements are used a lot with gardening, or

even walking down to get the morning paper will help. Change positions – When possible, change position frequently. Prolonged bending or repetitive twisting can put a lot of stress on your back. Use a small stool to sit on if you can. Try this stretch: while standing, put your hands on your hips and slowly bend backwards a few times. Use this time to take a walk around and have a drink to keep yourself hydrated as well. Digging – When digging in your spring mulch, try to use your legs as much as possible in a squatting position. Change the direction that you are facing so that you are not straining the same area for a prolonged

period of time. Weeding – Squat to pull weeds out of the ground rather than bending from the spine only. Knee protection – If you will be kneeling for a while, use knee pads or a cushion, or try to kneel on just one knee at a time. Pace yourself – Spread tasks over a few days if you’re not used to lots of labouring. If you’re sore, seek help – the team at Muscle People Physiotherapy can massage your sore muscles, or if you’ve injured yourself, we can provide physiotherapy to help get you back to where you want to be. For ACC accidents and injuries, we can lodge the claim for you; you don’t need to see your GP first. Contact Muscle People Physiotherapy city clinic on 961 0236 or Bishopdale clinic on 360 3606.

*Disclaimer: these exercises are given assuming no pre-existing injuries. If you have an injury and are concerned about these exercises, give us a call first.

he age of steam and the era of the atom may be worlds apart, but they met head on at a cocktail party recently at Canterbury Museum on September 4. A model of the steam locomotive named Lord Rutherford of Nelson, in honour of New Zealand’s most distinguished physicist Ernest Rutherford, was put on display at the museum. Originally a gift to Lord Rutherford’s grandson Patrick Fowler when as an eight-year-old boy, he participated in the engine’s naming ceremony at London’s St Pancras Station in December 1935. Mr Fowler subsequently donated the replica to this country, presenting it to the patron of the Rutherford’s Den Trust Margaret Austin last year in Beaminster, England. Lord Rutherford of Nelson will be displayed at Canterbury Museum until moving to a permanent home at Rutherford’s Den following refurbishment in 2015.

Painting Specialists committed to long-term in Christchurch Christchurch-based company Clearwater Painting prides itself on being a local company with local employees, offering the best-possible service and workmanship to its customers. “We are 100 per cent customer focused,” says owner Dave Clearwater. “The key aspect of our business is that we specialise in working with individual property owners, and we collate all the tradesmen involved in a job so everything runs smoothly.” Another notable aspect of Clearwater Painting is that seven of the tradespeople are female. “We’re very proud of that. The women are very good painters and have a great eye for detail. The added advantage is that many of our customers like having females working in their home,” Dave says. “We also have our female site manager, Erin, who makes sure all the jobs are done according to plan and completed on time.” In the office, the first point of contact for customers is Bernie, who liaises between

the homeowner and the tradespeople and guides customers through the renovation process. “People are trusting us with their biggest asset and our motto is ‘Treat the home as if it were your own’,” Bernie says. Clearwater Painting is currently specialising in ‘opt out’ work, and to date has completed earthquake repairs on more than 400 homes. “We do interior and exterior painting, wallpapering, gib stopping, plastering and roof repairs. We also have our own builders and can do work like bathroom remodelling, minor alterations, fencing and decking,” Dave says. Staff numbers have increased to deal with post-earthquake work and Dave hopes to retain all his staff, even when that work is finished. “We are committed to providing the best of service for many years to come.” For a no-obligation quotation, phone Dave Clearwater, 0274 800 967.

GOOD SAVE: The secret to saving is automatically putting money away each pinned by psychological factors. It is interesting that for those who have enrolled in KiwiSaver, the compulsory deduction of at least 3 per cent of their pay each payday has been a relatively painless way to save and, now that KiwiSaver balances are building to quite large sums, the benefits of regular saving are clear to all. Most people are surprised at how quickly their own contributions have mounted up over time. Therein lies the key to how to “spend less than you earn”; and that is to be a Secret Saver. A Secret Saver sets up a regular transfer each payday into a savings account that

is hidden out of sight, out of mind —in other words, not on your list of internet banking accounts and preferably with a different bank than your other accounts. That takes care of the psychological factors. Saving then happens automatically and painlessly and there is no temptation to spend what you can’t see. • Liz Koh is an authorised financial adviser. Help! I’ve got “quake-brain”

– what can I do about it?

Good blood pressure

B

S

ince the earthquakes turned our lives upside down, do you have days when everything is in the “too hard” basket? Do you have times when it’s hard to concentrate or prioritise all the things which need to be done and you just can’t seem to think straight however hard you try? Maybe you’ve joked about “quake-brain” or having a “senior moment” when you have struggled to remember something important, or perhaps you just can’t recall the last time you got a good night’s sleep. Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. Recovery isn’t just about repairing buildings and infrastructure, communities and lives need to be rebuilt too. We know from research that Cantabrians are weary, and that traumatic events like earthquakes - and dealing with their aftermath - take their toll on our minds and our bodies in many ways. New Zealand Red Cross have learned from international experience and created a series of training

120. The diastolic BP (the lower figure) is the pressure in the arteries between beats and, at rest, this should be between 60 to 70. In around 90 per cent of cases, high blood pressure is caused by an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. It is believed inflammation and stiffness of the blood vessels are major reasons for this increased resistance. Checking our blood pressure on a regular basis allows us to adjust our diet and lifestyle and see the benefits in our BP readings. Blood pressure monitors and further info on how to improve your overall health and BP naturally is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757.

lood pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced, the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (pulse rate) as well as the width of blood vessels, all via the nervous system. A higher BP is considered a major risk factor for strokes, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. If we can maintain our BP in the normal range, our overall health will be improved. Systolic BP (the upper figure) is when the heart contracts and pushes blood around the body. At rest, this should be between 100 to

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent

R

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. In a recent multi-country double-blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. To the amazement of the researchers, the patients who received the CoQ10

had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. The patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events but from all causes. According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. For more information, contact Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.

A

new course for Term 4, for instance, is pattern making. This course caters for those who have experience in sewing skills but find the fit of commercial or paper patterns unsatisfactory and who would like to explore the option of making a pattern that will actually fit them. The centre is offering a full range of sign language classes as well as te reo classes for those who want to learn the other two official languages of New Zealand. Other languages are also on offer. Risingholme is proud to announce that the new building on-site, made possible by the generosity of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust, is now complete and is ready for community use. This sizable room is ideal for seminars, workshops, yoga classes and so on. The pottery classes held the first very successful exhibition in the room. The SOUP exhibition showcased the work of students, working with soup as a theme. Risingholme is looking to extend its tutor pool for 2015. If you are interested, please

visit the tutor page on the Risingholme website and contact us. For more information on classes at Risingholme, Riccarton High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Shirley Boys’ High School and Hornby High School, contact the Risingholme Community Centre at 332 7359 or email info@risinigholme.org.nz. The full programme for Term 4 is available on the website www.risingholme.org.nz. Brochures are available at the Risingholme office and public libraries.

cott Fowler of Christchurch is a photography enthusiast, achieving the NZIBS graduate diploma in Freelance Photography in 2008. Since then his career has blossomed. Here’s his story.... “I now have several important accreditations for my photography: • Federation of International Art of Photography (Excellence Level) • Photographic Society of America (Proficiency Level) I achieved these by competing in international salons (competitions). “The NZIBS photography training gave me the skills and confidence to get my accreditations. Excellence level required 250 awards/

points. I achieved it with 493 different images. PSA proficiency level required 288 awards/ points with 96 images. This was a tough test of my photographic skills, but it was very rewarding. “I am now an accredited judge and an associate level photographer with the Photographic Society of New Zealand. Not bad for a middle-aged, late-starting student. “In 2012, I won the monochrome section of the Nikon Amateur Photographer of the Year. I’ve won three bronze awards and a silver award in the Better Photography Competition Australia. “I photograph weddings, events and commercials. Life is good, but it has come about by hard work and constantly improving my skill level. I guess I’m a lifetime student searching for the dynamics of taking better photographs.” Any readers who are attracted to the life of a freelance photographer or travel writer or journalist should get the package of free information from New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. Telephone 0800 801 994. *The photo shows Scott covered in mud, chasing competitors in the Christchurch Mud, Sweat and Tears Race, always looking for the perfect photo. Photo: Courtesy of Terry Casey

salon for his work experience and as a result, is starting an apprenticeship with them at the end of this term. Adam loves the creative side of this industry and the challenges it provides. The academy’s training has given Adam the skills and attitude required to be successful in this industry and gaining his national certificate is an important factor in securing an apprenticeship along with Adam’s great attitude and commitment, of course. Adam is excited about starting his apprenticeship and about his future work prospects. We also provide hands-on learning to achieve national qualifications in other courses.

passion for hairdressing and a desire to get a qualification led Adam (17), a former Mairehau High School student, to study fulltime at Academy New Zealand’s Christchurch campus. Adam is about to complete his National Certificate in Educational Achievement Level 2. The bonus is, the course is totally free for him under the youth guarantee programme. Adam enjoys the fact that the course is mostly practical and involves working with a qualified and experienced hairdresser, learning all aspects of the hairdressing industry in the academy’s salon. earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe workplace, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. Not all workplaces are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Dealing with minor cuts and superficial injuries or performing effective CPR can be achieved on a course of eight hours’ duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field, either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight-hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head, neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the workplace. In fact, one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicle accidents or falls in the home. are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12-hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. One day you maybe be called upon to help someone in need. Will you know what to do? If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Simply superb and unique in Purau Bay 187 Purau Avenue, Purau Bay, Lyttelton Harbour Deadline Sale

3 bedrooms | 2 bathroooms | 2-car garage | Listing number: 2721216

T

his new architecturally designed home is unique and built to the very highest standards, immensely strong, over engineered and built to withstand anything nature can throw at us. Cleverly designed to maximise the sun in all seasons, this home is incredibly easy to keep warm due to its design and construction with a woodburner and underfloor heating for those cooler nights. Offering three double bedrooms, two bathrooms and open-plan living, set on a sheltered north-facing level 1000m2 section only 100 metres (approx) from the beach. A large double garage, easy access and plenty of parking round off a very appealing package. Reluctant vendors are returning overseas so this fabulous property must be sold. Deadline sale (unless sold prior). All offers to be received by 4pm, Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Purau Bay is approximately 40 minutes’ drive from Christchurch CBD, making it a highly desirable holiday destination as it is so useable being close to Christchurch. No more spending hours in the car to get to your holiday home, you can even holiday and commute if needed. Properties in this lovely valley and by such a safe swimming beach are defying all the odds and selling fast generally as they come up very seldom. Excellent for swimming, boating and walking and stunning sunsets on the hills. Easy access to Lyttelton via the Diamond Harbour ferry. Properties here make an excellent investment and Purau Bay and valley is a truly magical place to visit or live. Escape the hustle and bustle of Christchurch and come and fall in love with Purau.

Open Homes on Sunday, September 21 and 28, 1pm to 1.30pm. For an appointment to view, contact Tim Dunningham of Min Sarginson Real Estate (Licensed Agent REAA 2008). Phone 027 651 5474 or 329 4161.

or the fourth year in a row, Rosebank Estate and Winery is celebrating Oktoberfest again this year. “The event keeps getting bigger and better every year” says Ernest Glad, Coowner. Like in Bavaria, the halls are beautifully decorated with décor from Germany, transforming Rosebank into a magical blue and white spectacle. Blue and white are the official colours of the Bavarian “Freistaat.” Added to this is a live Oompah Band to create a lively atmosphere. Lots of music normally played at the Munich Oktoberfest is also played. This creates a real party atmosphere and most people cannot help but sing along and dance with the tunes. Off course the singing of “Ein Prosit” gives a chance to “cool down” and relax before the next group of songs erupt. Cantabrians have shown that they can also party like the Germans do and seem to follow the motto “work hard, play hard.” "Like last year we will have lots of Bavarian food available including traditional dishes like hogs, sauerkraut, potatoes, pretzels, etc. Food will be available throughout the day with prices ranging from $10 to $25. A special menu has been created for the event," said Ernest. In order to make the event accessible to all, it is offered in four sessions over three days. The festival runs Friday 3rd October 6pm until 10pm, Saturday 4th October from 12pm until 4.00pm (Session 1) and 6pm until 10pm (session 2), and Sunday 5th October from 11am until 3pm. Doors open 30 minutes before official start times. Sunday is special Family Day where families are invited to bring the kids, play some games and relax. Special story telling sessions will be held for small children. Many fairy tales have a German origin like “Hanzel und Gretel” and kids should enjoy this. The competitions are a real treat and enjoyed by all. Couples are challenged to eat a biscuit off each other's chest, with their hands tied. In order to invite people to dress for the occasion, Rosebank will this year offer prizes for the most traditionally dressed lady and gentlemen (in Lederhozen and Dirndl). Also, do not forget the traditional beer competition. For those that do not have the right gear, some hats, etc are available at a minimal price. The event cannot be called an Oktoberfest without some great beers. The specially brewed Glättenbrau (Lager) is always a favourite as well as the locally brewed Bavarian Pilsner by Wigram Brewery. This year a German “Weissbeer” will also be available on tap. And everyone has to try at least one of the imported German beers of which a large variety is available. German style wines like Riesling and Gewürtztraminer are popular with the ladies. Entry is $10 if paid before the event ($12 at the door). Book and pay for your tickets now and get early site entry to select tables (30 minutes prior to start of event). And sorry, nobody is permitted to remain on site between Oktoberfest sessions. Advance bookings are strongly recommended by phoning 323 7353 or email bookings@rosebank.co
